Box Office Results November 18-20, 2011

Number:  1
Opening Weekend Gross:  $138,122,261
Theatres: 4,061
Theatre Average: $34,012
Weeks in Release: 1
Total Gross: $ 291,022,261(worldwide)
Budget: $110 Million
Running Time: 1 hrs. 48 min.
Distributor: Summit Entertainment
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Genre: Romance

While it wasn't quite able to reach the series high mark, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1's outstanding $138.1 million opening indicated that the sexy teen vampires are as popular as ever. What does appear to have lost some of its appeal, however, is dancing penguins: Happy Feet Two struggled to even open to half as much as its popular 2006 predecessor. Overall box office was up around 14 percent to over $221 million, and the weekend currently ranks as the sixth-highest on record.

Breaking Dawn's $138.1 million opening is second-best among Twilight movies behind 2009's New Moon ($142.7 million). That's a small gap, though, and Breaking Dawn still managed to claim fifth place on the all-time opening weekend chart behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3 and New Moon. As is typical for the Twilight movies, its weekend was incredibly front-loaded with 51.9 percent of the gross coming from Friday showings (including its $30.25 midnight tally).

Immortals is Released!

visit Immortals @ imdb.com

Box Office Results November 11-13, 2011

Number:  1
Opening Weekend Gross:  $~32 Million
Theatres: 3,112 (70% offering it in 3D)
Theatre Average: $10,283
Weeks in Release: 1
Total Gross: $68 Million (worldwide)
Budget: $75 Million
Running Time: 1 hrs. 50 min.
Distributor: Relativity
MPAA Rating: R
Genre: Fantasy Drama

Immortals debuted to an estimated $32 million, which is less than half of 300's $70.9 million and also way off from Clash of the Titans's $61.2 million. While those are both very similar movies, it's a slightly unfair comparison given the marketing dominance exercised by their distributor Warner Bros. In its own right, Immortals was actually very impressive. It is distributor Relativity Media's best opening ever by a long shot (Limitless was the previous high with $18.9 million), and it's also the top opening for a movie not released by a big six studio since Lionsgate's The Expendables debuted to $34.8 million last August. Finally, it's the second-highest opening for an R-rated 3D movie ever behind Jackass 3-D's $50.4 million, with 3D showings accounting for a substantial 66 percent of the weekend gross. The movie's audience was 60 percent male, 75 percent under the age of 35, and 35 percent Hispanic. Immortals received a "B" CinemaScore, and a "B+" from the under-25 crowd.

"Immortals": Simply put, I've never seen anything like the violence in "Immortals." It's easy to say that the slow-motion style is just a "300" ripoff, but it's not. In that film, characters moving slowly was a stylistic choice. In "Immortals," the time-disorienting motion is inherent to the nature of Gods and Titans, resulting in one of the single most breathtaking battle scenes I've ever seen committed to film, ever. Again, I have never seen anything like those final 20 minutes of "Immortals." It's some of the most beautiful violence I've ever witnessed on the big screen. Season of the Witch Blu-ray/DVD Released!

SOWbluray_front.jpg

Now I wasn't able to attend the crew screening of Season of the Witch, nor did I find the time to hit this action up in theaters, a new lovely addition to the family kept me on lock down.  But this epic movie inspired echo's of "Nick Cage Mo Fokin' Back" around the shop... and I love that.

Despite the poor ratings, and awful word of mouth response, I'm still excited to see it, the work was fun, we got to go shoot fire, burning steel wool, and ember elements on the stage, come on.

They even sent out a DVD/Blu-ray crew to conduct interviews, and from the bit I saw, I'm in one of the features below:  It's hilarious, out of all the things I said, they used a few tiny moments of me stating the absolute obvious, so awesome.  I'll have to post that up here at some point.

Bedtime Stories DVD Released!

Ohhh Bugsy why...

Bonus Features:

"In "It's Bugsy" we meet the three guinea pigs used to film the part of Bugsy, the guinea pig with googly eyes. He's really one of the stars of the film, so it was fun to see behind-the-scenes footage of the actors with the guinea pigs. (Having had a guinea pig in the past, I was impressed that the sounds made by the animated version and the real version all sounded very realistic.)" -Fitz (blogcritics.org)

Beverly Hills Chihuahua DVD Released!

Can you imagine I still haven't seen this one? In fact, the DVD is still sitting below my TV patiently waiting for me to crack it open, pop it in, and endure the adventure that awaits... (It's March 14th) heh.

There is one shot in particular I'm looking forward to watching, and that's this shot I did as a 'joke' daily. (a version or take sometimes we do just for shits and giggles) So we sent it off to the client along with a shipment, and they liked it so much they decided to use it in the movie?!? There are 2 dogs swimming to shore in a water/river bed scene, and instead of the one little doggy paddling it's way to shore, I had her get caught in the current and sucked down a water fall... and they used it, hah.

The Hollywood Reporter states "Disney's family fantasy Enchanted ruled the domestic box-office for a second consecutive session, grossing an estimated $17 million during the latest weekend. The music-filled Amy Adams film dropped an acceptable 50% from its first Friday-through-Sunday frame while boosting its cumulative box-office to $70.6 million..."

Sun Nov 25, 2007 11:15 PM EST
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Disney's fairy-tale romantic comedy "Enchanted" charmed audiences over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend, taking in more than $50 million at the North American box office.

"Enchanted," which stars Amy Adams as a fairy-tale princess in modern-day New York City, collected $50.1 million for what Disney executives said was the second-highest five-day Thanksgiving weekend box-office tally.

So how will Enchanted do? It's going to do very well... it's had a ton of charming reviews around the interwebs, Roeper & Ebert(Phillips) both enjoyed it!, 93% Fresh at the moment, Everyone loves Amy Adams performance, it's the holidays, it's a movie for kids, that adults will enjoy, sort of a date movie, and has Tippett Studio VFX, what's not to like!?!

The film's producer, Barry Josephson, credited the movie's better-than expected showing to its broad appeal to families and fresh approach, as well as Adams' performance as the wide-eyed princess coping on the mean streets of New York.

"Amy Adams really brought such a great spirit to the character. She truly has just this incredible exuberance you don't often see on screen," Josephson said. "She is a big surprise for people who don't know her. It's a breakout role."

Josephson said "Enchanted" brought in the highest five-day Thanksgiving weekend box office for a non-sequel, trailing only 1999's "Toy Story 2."

"We are ecstatic about it," said Mark Zoradi, president of Disney's motion picture group, who also praised performances by Adams and her co-star, Patrick Dempsey.

"It struck a chord in family movie-going, where it's not only great romantic comedy but it had all those little special things tying back to Disney history and music, and it just played across the board," he said.

Not a terrific opening, but how many people have time to go to the theatre this time of year? I think it do well over the holidays.

"Star vehicle The Pursuit of Happyness chased down the weekend top spot, exceeding two literary adaptations with presumably loyal followings, Eragon and Charlotte's Web. Compared to last year's King Kong opening, though, overall weekend business was down seven percent."

"Charlotte's Web spun $11.5 million on around 4,600 screens at 3,566 locations, which was about average for an adaptation of an older children's book but below par for a talking animal picture. Around Christmastime, though, business for family pictures is spread throughout the holidays. The $80 million-plus version of E.B. White's famous novel, which seemed to suffer from its resemblance to Babe and other recent yapping animals, will hope to weave a long run like past December releases Jumanji and another White adaptation, Stuart Little."

Theatrical Release: March 10, 2006 / Running Time: 99 Minutes / Rating: PG

Director: Brian Robbins

Cast: Tim Allen (Dave Douglas), Robert Downey Jr. (Dr. Kozak), Kristin Davis (Rebecca Douglas), Danny Glover (Ken Hollister), Spencer Breslin (Josh Douglas), Jane Curtin (Judge Claire Whittaker), Zena Grey (Carly Douglas), Philip Baker Hall (Lance Strictland), Coal (The Shaggy Dog), Annabelle Gurwitch (Justin Forrester's Attorney), Jane Hajduk (News Reporter), Joshua Leonard (Justin Forrester), Joel David Moore (Pound Employee), Jarrad Paul (Larry), Phil Pavel (Highway Driver), Shawn Pyfrom (Trey), Rhea Seehorn (Lori), Bess Wohl (Dr. Owen Lightman), Craig Kilborn (Baxter), Laura Kightlinger (Ms. Foster), Casey Sander (Leader)

Synopsis:
Comedian Tim Allen unleashes all the outrageous fun in this doggone hilarious update of Disney's comedy classic! The adventures begin when workaholic Dave Douglas (Allen) is accidentally transformed into a lovable dog. Now as Dave digs to uncover the mystery, this overworked dad wants nothing more than to stop fetching ... and get back to fathering. But before he does, he's about to discover that being man's best friend gives him a curious insight into what it takes to be a great dad! The tail-wagging fun continues with bonus features to howl about including bone-tickling bloopers, deleted scenes, and a special bark-along bone-us feature dogs will love! Rated PG.

Interesting Post-script:
This is actually the fifth time that the Disney studio has mined the source material -- roughly, Felix Salten's 1930 mystery novel The Hound of Florence; more accurately, the premise of a male human turning into a shaggy dog and the comedy that emanates from it. I've already discussed at length the 1959 original, the 1976 sequel, and here, this loose 2006 remake; these three are the best-known adaptations, for they are the only three that reached the big screen (and home video, for that matter). But, in the fall of 1994, at the beginning of a period rich in remakes-for-TV (which soon spilled over to the remakes-for-theaters business), there was Dennis Dugan-directed The Shaggy Dog starring Scott Weinger, Ed Begley Jr., and James Cromwell. Before that, there was 1987's The Return of The Shaggy Dog, a sequel to the original co-written by Oscar winner Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) and featuring Gary Kroeger and Cindy Morgan (Tron). These two made-for-TV outings probably won't see the light of DVD or American airwaves anytime soon, but know that they do exist and that Disney chooses to release endless compilations of cartoon shorts and random TV show episodes instead.

BOX OFFICE RECORD BREAKER
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest plundered the record books with a $135.6 million opening weekend, swatting Spider-Man's long standing $114.8 million milestone atop the all time chart.

Pirates pilfered a trove of records, but the key ones, in addition to opening weekend, were biggest single and opening day and fastest to $100 million. On Friday, Dead Man's Chest raked in $55.8 million (including $9 million's worth of 2,100 midnight showings), eclipsing Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's $50 million and grossing more in one day than its predecessor, The Curse of the Black Pearl, did in its entire opening weekend. Dead Man's Chest also became the first picture to cross the century mark in two days flat.

'King Kong' a Gentle Giant on Opening Day

by Brandon Gray December 15, 2005

Relative to industry and media expectations, Universal Pictures' King Kong was a big softy on opening day, grabbing $9.8 million from around 7,500 screens at 3,567 playdates.

"We think the numbers are fine," countered Nikki Rocco, Universal's head of distribution. "We think we had a great kickoff to a film that we known has great playability. Based on word-of-mouth we're confident it only gets better from here."

Director Peter Jackson's $207 million remake of the 1933 monster movie notched the 21st biggest Wednesday opening on record, significantly less than the $18.2 million start of Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Prior to the debut, Universal had suggested Fellowship as a benchmark.

"Kong didn't break any records," Rocco said. "But I think exhibition is thrilled. There were no kids out of school, and there were terrible weather conditions. Kong's not a built-in franchise. It's not a geeky kind of thing. It wasn't a record breaker, but it's a solid start. A million and half people [from opening day] will be spreading word-of-mouth. I think we're going to have a fabulous weekend."

A mid-week launch of King Kong's magnitude in December prior to Christmas lacks much precedent. The Lord of the Rings pictures each opened on Wednesdays, but they struck a little later in December as the Christmas movie-going season was heating up. Rocco noted that vacation for the nation's schools doesn't start until Monday, when 42 percent will be out.

The Wednesday launch of a hyped event picture will normally equal around 25 percent to 50 percent of the opening weekend. The most notable exception was Shrek 2. The fractured fairy tale sequel began with an $11.8 million Wednesday but went on to enjoy a $108 million opening weekend.

Additionally, King Kong bowed in 36 foreign territories on Wednesday and racked up an estimated $8 million, bringing its worldwide opening day to about $17.8 million.

The opening for the Francis Lawrence-directed "Constantine" set several records of its own this weekend: It was the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film during any four-day holiday session, and it was a company best for Warners for the Presidents Day weekend, topping "Message in a Bottle" ($18.8 million).
